Gastroenterologist

Dr. Hoan Tran is a Bay Area native. He earned his medical degree from UC Davis and completed his internal medicine residency at Loma Linda University, where he was recognized as Resident of the Year. He went on to complete a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the State University of New York (SUNY) Buffalo.

What is a gastroenterologist?

A gastroenterologist is a sub-specialist of internal medicine who evaluates and treats a wide variety of digestive diseases and disorders (esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, gallbladder, pancreas) via medications and minimally invasive endoscopies. One week before Colonoscopy

  • Stop all supplements (iron, vitamins, herbs) and follow a low-fiber diet: no vegetables, seeds, berries, or popcorn.
  • Stop blood thinners (e.g., Warfarin, Plavix, Eliquis, Xarelto) only with your doctor's approval. Do not stop aspirin if used for prevention.
  • Stop injectable GLP-1 medications (Ozempic, Wegovy, Trulicity, etc.) as they delay stomach emptying.

One week before Upper Endoscopy

  • Stop iron pills, vitamins, herbs, and supplements.
  • Stop all blood thinners (e.g., Coumadin, Plavix, Eliquis, Xarelto) — only after doctor approval.
  • Do NOT stop aspirin if taken for heart protection.
  • Stop injectable GLP-1 agonists (Ozempic, Wegovy, Trulicity, Victoza, Saxenda, Byetta, Mounjaro).

One week before Sigmoidoscopy

  • Stop iron pills, vitamins, herbs, and supplements.
  • Stop all blood thinners (e.g., Coumadin, Plavix, Eliquis, Xarelto) — only after doctor approval.
  • Stop injectable GLP-1 agonists (Ozempic, Wegovy, Trulicity, Victoza, Saxenda, Byetta, Mounjaro).
  • Start a low-fiber diet: avoid vegetables, seeds, berries, popcorn, and high-fiber foods.
  • Continue aspirin if for heart protection.
